A Wooden Tower Case

by Fisherking

This article is about my Amiga and Mediator Tower/desktop project.

Wood rules! After getting a mediator PCI module in December 2000 my old tower didn't work out any more, which also was a 'hack' using a PC tower and modify it to fit the Amiga A1200 motherboard.

Since I work as a carpenter and know wood better than metal, why not......make the whole thing in wood.

Also material cost is very low with wood. I don't know how much you need throwing out for a winner/power tower, but in wood parts my tower costs less than 20-25 US$.

Some pictures show a totally different desktop/box but I made a prototype in January, so I had something to measure height/width of the PCI cards at different sockets, so everything helped me finish this last solution.

What's left is small adjustments, surface treatment and at the end, colorize it and make the Amiga logo really show by adding an identical but 1 mm inlaid Amiga logo 'sticker' on top, just as I did on my last 'G4 box'.

Working with wood I just love working with wood.

With the right tools and patience + time, you can shape whatever you want.

I used a cnc controlled router for much of the job...

In this box it's very easy to access any hardware.

Future project? It would be pretty cool to find and build/buy a VGA=>LCD interface and hook up this 12" lcd screen.

Connecting it to the AGA port and use it for watching old/new demos.

Mounting it to one of the sides on the tower and this suddenly turns into a portable computer.

If anyone happen to have such info please mail me :) The screen is a SHARP LM12S469 and used to be in a Toshiba Satellite laptop. In a 'laptop parts' webshop this screen was priced to 350 US dollars, so throwing it away is a bit difficult.
